Geiger's Vertical Solution Pro Sharp 4X, a jig for sharpening woodturning bowl gouges and spindle gouges. Includes and explanation and installation instructions.

The Vertical Solution Pro Sharp 4X is a system for sharpening:
  • side ground bowl gouges
  • micro bevel bowl gouges
  • spindle gouges
and other woodturning gouges. It can be used with a two-wheel bench grinder or a Tormek (or similar) system. Some people have even installed it on their belt sander.

The benefits of the Pro Sharp 4X are:
  • Easy to install. Requires only one adjustment!
  • Works with grinders of any height.
  • Mounts directly onto a Wolverine V-Notch with four setscrews.
  • Compensates for changes in grinding wheel diameter.
  • Compensates for tool length.
  • Includes gauges for accurate set up and repeatability.
  • Quickly changes positions to produce these four very repeatable bevel angles; 70º, 60º, 50º and 40º .
  • Use a sharpening jig of your choice. Instructions are included for the Ellsworth and the One Way Wolverine Vari Grind.
  • Significantly reduces tool wear
  • You will spend less time sharpening and more time turning wood.

The Pro Sharp 4X can produces bevel angles for the following grinds:
  • Ellsworth/Irish grind on bowl gouges
  • Micro bevel grind with up to three relief bevels.
  • Spindle gouges at 40°

A new innovative mounting system was introduced in 2014!
The 16" long arm designed to slide into a Wolverine receiver has been eliminated. It has been replaced by a new adapter plate that attaches directly to the Wolverine V-Notch as shown on the left.
To install it, you just position the Wolverine V-notch so it faces the floor, slip our new adapter onto the rear plate of the Wolverine and tighten four setscrews.

Pictured to the left is the entire system as it is supplied today.
This design reduced the size of the box by 50% thus reducing shipping cost.
Also, due to the compact size, demonstrators can carry it much more easily when they travel.

You can use a jig of your choice: Instructions are included for setting up the system for using the Ellsworth Jig and the One Way Wolverine Vari Grind jig.

To use a Vari Grind jig to obtain an Ellsworth grind or Irish grind with the Pro sharp 4X, the angle of the variable support arm needs to be set to a specific angle. Instructions for setting the position of the variable arm are included in the manual and can be viewed here. We offer an optional gauge (pictured below) that simplifies the setting and makes it very repeatable. Should you want to use the Vari Grind jig for other purposes and then return to the setting to sharpen a gouge with the Ellsworth/Irish grind, the optional gauge is very handy.

Installing and calibrating the system is simple. A 60° gauge that fits into your jig, mimicking a gouge, is provided to accurately calibrate the system to your grinder. There is only one adjustment and it needs to be performed one time!

The Pro Sharp 4X, introduced in 2012, possesses the same great features as its predecessor: The Classic Geiger's Vertical Solution, on the market since 1999 and used by many woodturners worldwide. The Pro Sharp 4X expands sharpening to four bevel angles (70°, 60°, 50° and 40°) that are very repeatable. Obviously, more and different angles are obtainable if you have a jig with an adjustable stem, but the Pro Sharp 4X will make four angles very repeatable. Having four angles available to you will enable you to produce the following grinds:
  • Ellsworth/Irish grind at 60°
  • A micro-bevel grind at 50°, 60° or 70° with up to three relief bevels
  • A 50°/40° degree grind
  • A 40° on either a bowl gouge or a spindle gouge.
No other system on the market has similar capabilities!

The prices of the Vertical Solution Pro Sharp 4X are:

System price: $129.95
A standard upgrade kit (for existing Classic Vertical Solutions): $70
($65 if you already have a 60° gauge)

The standard upgrade kit includes: a new V-notch with a 4 position shift rod and tethered cross pin, a new horizontal positioning gauge, a 60 degree gauge and instructions.

The Classic Vertical Solution, engineered to produce an Ellsworth/Irish grind at 60°, is once again available for only $115.95. If you only want the Ellsworth grind and don't really care about the additional capabilities of the Pro Sharp 4X, the Classic is perfect for you! And the Classic Vertical Solution is upgrade able!
