Robust Independence Lathe

The Independence lathe opens up a whole new world for seated turners.  This innovative design was conceived as result of thorough research and listening to ideas from several seated turners.

Independence
The Independence is a lathe specifically designed with the needs of seated turners in mind. It has fully adjustable height and a bed that can tilted up to 30 degrees, so it can be ergonomically optimized for the individual turner. Sporting a full 16" swing, sliding headstock, stainless steel ways and a 1.5 or 2HP variable speed motor with remote control, the Independence is not a toy.
Adam Hood with the first Independence
Adam Hood, a full-time professional woodturner, was the first person to receive an Independence. Adam had experienced difficulties while turning wood on traditional lathes from a wheel chair and is thrilled to finally have a lathe that addresses his needs as a seated turner.

The Indpendence is sparking interest!
Soon after Adam received his lathe, Tony George, one of several seated turners that was consulted during the development of the Independence, visited Adam so he could see and test drive the Independence lathe. Brent English, owner of Robust Tools LLC, is expressly interested in their impressions and ideas.

David Ellsworth also showed up! Although not a seated turner, David had influence on the design as well.

From this view you can see the remote control, currently attached to the headstock, and the digital controller. Notice the handle provided to release the head stock so it can be slid anywhere along the bed.
Tailstock
The tailstock weighs about 23 lbs and would be a burden to remove and replace it during a session at the lathe. A Tilt Away is provided to allow lowering it out of the way. The size of the control handles on the headstock, banjo and the tailstock are larger than is used on other Robust lathes. This provides additional leverage and for the turner to hold onto and move themselves around.

Tool Caddy
For convenience and safety, a tool caddy is securely attached to the left leg. It pivots and slides so tools can be easily reached by the turner.

Legs
An L-shaped leg supports the tailstock end of the lathe. It is the same height as a doorway threshold so not to significantly interfere with chair wheels.
Working at the Indpendence
As you can see in this photo, Adam is able to get very close to his work and has the lathe set at a comfortable working height.
